Private lessons are great for developing your own technique or focusing on particular skills you want to improve! Learn from our instructors who have over 20 years of dance experience between them.
Lessons fees payable directly to the instructor(s) before the lesson starts

You can hire 1 instructor or a partner pair
Students must find a location for the lesson
Our instructors are based in Harrisonburg, VA. If the lesson is elsewhere, they may expect travel reimbursement in addition to the lesson fee.
Lessons can be alone or you can bring a partner!
You can split the cost with your partner!

Gray Smiley is a co-founder of Harrisonburg Swing and is on its executive board. He is also a doctoral student in the James Madison University School of Music. Gray's been dancing since 2021 and particularly loves fast dances like Charleston and up-tempo Lindy hop. He teaches at Harrisonburg Swing and Swing Cville, regularly attends dance workshops around the United States, and was a finalist in the Lindyfest 2025 newcomer competition. In addition to general dance vocabulary, his teaching emphasizes musicality, precise control of balance, clear tactile communication, and exact movement timing.
Isabelle is a co-founder of Harrisonburg Swing and is on its executive board. She learned to dance Lindy hop in Montana six years ago. She also dances tango in addition to Lindy! A professional flutist, pianist, and composer, Isabelle is a master's student at JMU.

Nil is a co-founder of Harrisonburg Swing and is on its executive board. She first started dancing at Case Western Reserve University four years ago. She teaches at Swing Cville and by day is a biomedical engineer at Merck. She regularly attends dance workshops around the United States and internationally. Her teaching emphasizes connection, tension and compression, flow & momentum, turns, follower styling, and variations.
Reggie is a co-founder of Harrisonburg Swing and is on its executive board. By day, they sling cider at Sage Bird. By night, they cut a rug on the dance floor. They first learned the basic step ten years ago and have been dancing ever since! Reggie regularly attends workshops across the United States and took 3rd place as a follow at the Flying Home NC 2025 competition in the Newcomer division.
